Project description

Creating digital artwork has always been a passion of mine and projects like this make me excited whether they are commissioned by a client or just done for myself. In this project I was commissioned to create a Christmas themed artwork with a touch of fantasy. I decided to take a slightly comedic approach and combine the magic of Christmas that the client whished for and mix it with something much more ordinary and familiar, in this case the car.

Starting with a sketch

Usually I would start a project like this with drawing on paper as it is faster and lets me try out different layouts and ideas quickly trying to visualise and get an idea of how the final artwork would look like. I do this because it helps me think about things such as composition and lighting and also get a sense of what kind of assets I will need to start working on the digital image compositing. (also because I enjoy drawing :)

Selecting Images and assets

After an idea is in place and I have a vision of how I want the final outcome to look like I go online to try and find as many images I could somehow use or incorporate in my work. Often times my idea will adapt or change based on the assets I find as they might give me new options I hadn't considered before.

Creating the landscape

One of the most important steps for me personally is creating a realistic and dynamic landscape for the artwork. Here I pay all my attention to the composition of elements and bringing the focus to the subject but keeping the surroundings interesting and full of detail. This step is crucial because if done incorrectly a viewer will quickly be able to spot a mistake in perspective, size or even depth as they are things that come naturally to us.
Bringing it all together with lighting and shadows
This step is where the work really starts to take shape. I add light elements determining all sources of light in the scene and adding highlights and shadows to the subject and the surroundings accordingly. Just like in the previous step I must be very careful and think thoroughly about how light would work in a scene like this as a mistake here will make the whole work look unrealistic and ruin its magic.
