Project description

For this project I worked for Društvo Hospic which is a Slovenian non-profit organisation that provides therapy to people in need. They specialise in the area of grief and try to help people tackle facing death or death of loved ones. My task was to create a video or animation that explains the process of grief. The video is meant to be shown to people suffering from a loss of a loved person and is supposed to help them understand what they are feeling and help them on their grieving journey. The project was executed by me from start to finish which includes interviews with the target audience and research, storyboard creation and writing the script for the voiceover, Illustration and finally animation.

Designing with simplicity that can show emotion

For a project like this I had to think about many aspects when designing my character, not only regarding its visual appearance but also its functionality and practicality when it came to animation later on. I decided on a design with soft and simple features that gave the character a stylised look but also gave me the ability to display basic emotions through facial expressions and posture which was much needed in this project. I roughly based his skeleton on simple geometric shapes which allowed me to incorporate more advanced animation such as walking.

The colour that compliments the animation

When it comes to colour I also tried to keep it as simple as possible while incorporating enough contrast and variety that it wouldn't get in the way of the animation. I decided on 2 simple colour schemes for the 2 main characters that I could use throughout the animation and connect the characters to these colours which allowed me to refer to them without drawing the character itself, as done with the butterfly representing the female character.

Typography that enhances the experience

The typography is a simple sans serif font that has a lot of versatility in terms of the thickness of the characters. That allowed me to create clear contrast in my titles and breakup the text visually as well as put emphasis on certain parts of the titles.

Simple scene illustration that gets the point across

The scenes with which my characters interact throughout the animation had to be simple and effective. I decided on a very minimalistic and simple illustrative approach as I though this type of style would interfere the least with the message and the emotions being displayed as well as allow the viewer to pay more attention to the voiceover which is a crucial part of the video. The scenes therefore contain only the elements I deemed necessary to create the environment I wanted and get the message across as quickly as possible.
